The Fabulous Five (staple beauty items)

Hi, I’m Megan and I am a self-professed beauty product junkie (waves hello as if I’m in a self-help meeting, which to be honest, maybe wouldn’t be too bad of an idea). Over the years, I can easily say that I have tried juuuuuust about every product out there when it comes to skin, hair, and nails. It’s gotten a bit better over the years thanks to now having to share a small San Francisco bathroom with my husband, but I used to pour through magazines reading about products and then run out to go purchase them. My bathroom during my early 20’s looked like my very favorite aisles at Target, and I was pretty okay with it because it meant that I could give recommendations and reviews to just about anyone who asked me (and even those who didn’t).

Nowadays, I try to limit myself to investing in quality products that I hope become staple items in my makeup bag/bathroom cabinet. It definitely helps that I work at a high-end hair salon that carries both Davines and R & Co products, so I have access to those amazing brands when I want to try something new.

I thought I would do a review of 5 of my absolute *favorite* makeup products that have become my go-to’s for my morning workday routine, because I know how frustrating it can be to try new expensive products and have them not work out for whatever reason.

Dermalogica Active Moist Moisturizer

As far as daily moisturizers go, I have tried a few now that I’m in my early 30’s and started realizing that I needed to be taking better care of my skin. This one has proven to be my favorite for a few reasons.

  • Doesn’t cause breakouts
  • Doesn’t make me look greasy throughout the day
  • Makeup goes on smoothly over it
  • Great price point ($40-$60, depending on where you find it)
  • Absorbs quickly
  • One tube lasts forever because a little goes a long way

Too Faced Shadow Insurance

This stuff has been part of my routine for quite a while now. It comes in both a shimmery finish and a matte (I prefer the matte) and it does suuuch a great job at keeping your eyeshadow in place throughout the day without creasing. I work long hours at my salon (9+ hours a day usually) and generally this stuff keeps my eye makeup perfectly in place after all of that. Like the moisturizer, a little of this stuff goes a very long way, as well.

NARS Blush + Bronzer Palette

THIS PALETTE IS AMAZING! It was gifted to me by my friend Mandi, and I instantly knew that I was going to be in love. It has such a good bronzer, so that has been my go-to for giving myself a light touch of healthy glow since I live in the fog and never can get a natural tan (ugh). It also has three different blush colors, including the ever popular “orgasm”, and a highlighter.

Urban Decay Perversion Liquid Eyeliner

I used to be a hardcore Stila “Stay All Day” liquid liner fan, and then I’m pretty sure that they re-formulated it at some point because it just was not the same. It used to go on so nicely and truly stay all day long, but the last couple of times I bought it it seemed very thin and watered down. I had been hearing about how great the Urban Decay one was, so I decided to try it out. Sure enough, it has become my new fave. The black is a dark, inky liquid that goes on in one swipe and stays put extremely well.

Anastasia Beverly Hills DIPBROW pomade

What’s that famous quote, “Never let anyone with bad eyebrows tell you shit about life”? Okay so maybe it’s not so famous, but it is 100% true. Eyebrows are the one thing that truly can change the entire look of someone’s face. One makeup tip that I’ve heard that I can agree with is that if you’re going to run out of the house quickly and only have time to fix up one feature, make sure it’s your brows. This brow pomade is so so wonderful. I use their #12 brush to apply it, and it goes on smoothly so you can fill and shape your brows naturally without looking like this. It lasts all day without flaking and comes in a ton of shades.
